a morphing Frank Stella, 2023
Permanent Public Art Installation
School am Weinweg, Karlsruhe, Germany

A Morphing Frank Stella is a long-term, site-responsive light sculpture by artist Betty Rieckmann, created as part of a commissioned public art project for the School am Weinweg, a special education center for students with visual impairments. This series of works started in 2014 and continually adapted through 2023, the work evolves as a living system—its shifting shapes, colors, and light sequences attuned to the needs of its immediate environment and audience.

Taking inspiration from the dynamic geometry and chromatic language of Frank Stella, the piece reshapes itself through programmed sequences of light and form, translating abstraction into an inclusive sensory experience. For the School am Weinweg, Rieckmann developed a unique light program in close consultation with educators and specialists, ensuring that the luminosity, rhythm, and contrast of the installation would be perceptible and engaging for students with varying levels of visual ability.

The project also included a hands-on workshop in light art led by Rieckmann, in which students explored different aspects of light—color, refraction, and perception—using gels, prisms, and simple sensory experiments. This educational component reflects the artist’s commitment to accessibility and agency in contemporary light-based practices, ensuring that the artwork is both a spatial presence and a pedagogical tool.

As a result, A Morphing Frank Stella becomes more than a static installation: it is a multidimensional, responsive field of color and reflection that sensitively engages its context, expanding the vocabularies of light, learning, and participation.
